- A commitment to training and education through the Decora Academy.
By blending tradition and innovation, Decora empowers creators to design surfaces that are not only beautiful but also environmentally responsible.
Morning in Lercara Friddi: Starting at Decora Academy
Day 1 began in Lercara Friddi, a picturesque Sicilian town where Decora Academy is based. Over a light breakfast, participants gathered in Decora’s training center, ready to begin their creative journey.
The Academy is more than a classroom – it’s a space where decorative finishes come alive. From Venetian plaster textures to pigmented lime washes, the environment itself is a gallery of inspiration. Participants were introduced to Decora’s mission: teaching authentic Italian decoration techniques to a global audience.
Journey to Palermo: Architecture and Inspiration Everywhere
After breakfast, the group set off for Palermo, Sicily’s cultural capital. Known for its Baroque architecture, Byzantine mosaics, Arab-Norman churches, and bustling piazzas, Palermo is a city that embodies centuries of history.
Our first stop was Decora A&C headquarters in Palermo, where participants saw firsthand how Italian decorative finishes are produced and distributed. Then we embarked on a guided city tour, taking in stunning landmarks:
- The Palermo Cathedral, with its fusion of Gothic, Moorish, and Baroque design.
- Historic palaces with façades perfect for showcasing lime wash and Venetian plaster restoration techniques.
- Narrow streets and colorful markets that echo with authentic Sicilian life.
For anyone passionate about architecture and design, Palermo is an open-air classroom. Its textures, colors, and surfaces are the perfect backdrop for decorative finish inspiration.
Culinary Creativity: MasterChef Italia Chef Luciano at AddaKousa
No experience of Sicily is complete without food. Lunch on Day 1 was a feast at AddaKousa, where we were treated to dishes prepared by Chef Luciano, from MasterChef Italia Season 9.
Every plate celebrated Sicilian tradition with a contemporary twist. Fresh seafood, locally sourced produce, and bold flavors showcased why Sicilian cuisine is one of the most celebrated in Italy.
This wasn’t just a meal – it was another lesson in creativity. Just as Venetian plaster layers build depth on walls, Sicilian flavors layer complexity on the palate. Both food and decorative arts share a dedication to craftsmanship, authenticity, and storytelling.
Afternoon at Decora Headquarters: Showroom & Product Experience
After exploring more corners of Palermo, we returned to Decora A&C headquarters for an exclusive showroom visit guided by Luigi Sparacello, the owner of Decora.
The showroom itself is a masterpiece, with walls showcasing every type of Venetian plaster, lime wash, metallic finish, and decorative coating produced by Decora. Luigi explained the history, sustainability, and versatility of each product, highlighting how Decora finishes are used in luxury hotels, historic restorations, modern architecture, and creative interiors worldwide.
Participants touched the textures, compared finishes, and discovered how eco-friendly lime-based plasters are superior to synthetic paints – not just aesthetically, but also for health and sustainability.
Key showroom highlights:
- Venetian plaster (stucco veneziano): Polished, marble-like finish with depth and elegance.
- Tadelakt: Traditional Moroccan lime plaster, waterproof and ideal for bathrooms.
- Lime wash paints: Richly pigmented, breathable finishes for interior and exterior walls.
- Metallic and decorative effects: Perfect for accent walls and luxury designs.
It was a hands-on education in the art of Italian decorative surfaces.
International Connections at Decora Academy
One of the most inspiring aspects of Day 1 was the diversity of participants. People joined from all over the world, forming an international creative community. This diversity enriched every experience – whether discussing surface finishes, sharing cultural perspectives, or simply enjoying Sicilian hospitality.
Children were also part of the journey, adding energy and joy to the group. Their presence reminded us that creativity has no boundaries – it belongs to every generation.
Evening Return to Lercara Friddi
The day concluded back in Lercara Friddi, where we gathered for dinner. Surrounded by new friends, colleagues, and fellow creators, we reflected on everything we had experienced: Palermo’s architecture, Sicilian flavors, and Decora’s decorative arts.
Day 1 was more than sightseeing – it was about living the values of Decora A&C: creativity, authenticity, community, and sustainability.
